Cusco Face to Face

This half-day walking tour of Cusco allows you to learn more about how modern Peruvians live in this ancient city, including the best local markets, where to buy knock-off products, public schools, local pharmacies, as well as many other places. While walking through the narrow streets of the city, your guide will teach you about the local culture and point out unique foods, explain how the education system here works, describe ancient traditions that are still practiced, and will answer all of your questions about Cusco and Peru! On the tour we will stay in the center of Cusco, and will only take you to places that are safe for both tourists and locals.

Itinerary

We will meet you at your hotel at 1:00 pm. From there we will walk to the Plaza de Armas to learn about some of the history of Cusco and the Incas. After that we will head to a local restaurant that features typical Peruvian food such as fried pork, guinea pig, pork chops, stuffed spicy peppers, and many other options. Here you can try the local drink called chicha, which is made from fermented corn. The percentage of alcohol is low, and you will have the option to try the regular chicha made from yellow corn, or a sweeter version called frutillada which has strawberries added. If you would like you can also have lunch here or try a typical meal, but please note that this is not included in the tour. If you are vegetarian we can visit a local vegetarian restaurant instead.

After visiting the restaurant, we will head to the Plaza San Francisco which is another important plaza in Cusco. On Sundays at this plaza there is a local market where Cusqueños come to sell and buy clothing, shoes, and other different supplies. There are also local games and typical food available. As you walk around the city, your guide will answer your questions and explain to you how the public education and healthcare systems in Peru operate. Then we will walk to the San Pedro market where vendors sell everything imaginable including different cuts of meat, bread, fruits, medicinal plants, spices and Peruvian delicacies such as frogs.

We will then continue to the Paraiso market which is where locals buy and sell electronics and other items. Then we will stop by the Baratillo market which has small stores set on tiny stone streets. If it is a Saturday, there is a flea market, and many people come from all over to sell their goods. We will then make our way walking back to your hotel and drop you off at about 6:00 pm.
